Theatre visits

Provisional programme for 2010
The Theatre Group's next visit will be to: The Theatre Royal for
ENJOY by Alan Bennett on Wednesday 17th March 2010. (Curtain up at 2.00pm.)

Tickets are £14.60 each if I get 21 names on the list. At present, there are 17 - so 4 more names please to get the reduction from £16.

BUT I need names AND money for this at the January meeting.

The play is set in Leeds where an ageing couple are living in the city’s last back to back. A sociologist visits them on their last day before being rehoused in a brand new maisonette. Alison Steadman stars along with David Troughton.

A critic comments:
For me, and I imagine most other people who have seen the production, I
relished the opportunity to re-evaluate a Bennett play of this nature. It
was an enlightening chance to see some of the author's work from 1980, a
time when he was yet to be tarnished with the ill- fitting "teddy bear
playwright" label. Twenty-nine years after its release, the revival of Enjoy
has allowed audiences to make up their own minds - and the public response
has been exceptionally positive. Indeed, the production arrived in the West
End with a £1m box office advance. The production is at times overly
theatrical, and some of the scenes are undeniably slapstick, but the script
is also poignant, visceral, and, in places, revelatory - and, as with much
of Bennett's work, it is heavily biographical.

The Guardian gives it 5 stars, and The Independent, 4 stars.

After that, it’s to the Theatre Royal again for ‘We’ll Meet Again’ on Thursday 8th April 2010. (Curtain up at 2.00 pm.)

Tickets are £9.00 each – down from £10 if I get 20 to go. At the moment, there are 11 names.

This is a Hits from the Blitz performance paying tribute to the singers and comedians of the war years – an afternoon of nostalgia and singing along!

A Reminder: Both these performances have to be paid for at the meeting in January or the booking lapses! So save your pennies from Santa!

Stamford: From July 6th - 10th, the Open Air Shakespeare has 'Much Ado About Nothing'.
More information later, but I will book 16 seats and use the Community bus again. Put your name down early!

Gilbert and Sullivan:
Does anyone fancy 'Ruddigore' at the Theatre Royal in March? Opera North are doing it. If you're interested, see me ASAP.
