DIARY DATES & FORTHCOMING EVENTS

The main U3A monthly meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month (except for August and December) from 10.00 am to 12.45 pm at

THE MASONIC HALL, 155 NOTTINGHAM ROAD, MANSFIELD  (The Oakham Suite, next to The Talbot Inn) which has full disabled access.  The interest/study group leaders are always available at these meetings.

If you miss the monthly meeting and require information about an interest group please ring the leader, but if unable to contact the leader please ring a committee member.  (Names and telephone numbers are listed on the membership cards).

Will leaders who are planning outings, visits, holidays, events etc let Terry the Trips Organiser know – he maintains a Year Planner and will also be able to tell you if there are any clashes with other events.

 

 

INTEREST/STUDY GROUP MEETINGS 2008/9

20th December
Whist. This interest group will meet at the St Philip Neri Community Centre at 7.30pm.Contact Edith Senior for further details.

8th January
Classical Music 1. 2.00pm at Peter Dawson's home. Composer - Weber.

22nd January
Luncheon Club. Our next lunch will welcome the Chinese New Year with a traditional Cantonese feast at China Fong (Ye Old Plough), Pleasley, 12.00 for 12.30pm. Some places are still available on a first-come basis if anyone contacts me (David Ling) on 01623 822994. The cost will be approximately £16.

26th January
Classical Music 2. 2.00pm at Peter Crabbe's home. Composer - Prokofiev.

12th February
Classical Music 1. 2.00pm at Eric Jenkins's home. Composer - TBA.

23rd February
Classical Music 2. 2.00pm at Desley & John's home. Composers - Liszt and Fauré.

Regular meeting dates are shown below, based on the weeks of each month.  As an example, the Current Affairs Group is seen in the programme to meet on the Tuesday afternoon of the second week of each month (ie the second Tuesday of the month).  From a 2008 calendar the second Tuesdays are seen to be 8th July, 12th August, 9th September, 14th October, etc.

Quiz Night at St John's Centre, Mansfield. Tickets on sale at November monthly meeting, £5 including supper!

Thursday 26th March 2009
Trip to Warwick (Treasures). Many antique shops close to city centre. Cost: £8.00 - £9.50, depending on coach capacity. Why not come anyway, even if antiques is not your thing! See Joy Crowe at monthly meeting to book.

Tuesday 31st March 2009
Coffee Morning, 10.00 - 12.00 at The Towers, Botany Road, Mansfield. Excellent stalls, incuding cakes, plants, tombola plus raffle.

Friday 8th May 2009
Trip to Saltaire. Tour of Titus Salt's model village with guide in period costume, David Hockney paintings in Salts Mill plus lots more of interest. Full details later.

U3A 2009 Summer Schools

Each summer there are 2 national summer schools organised by members of the Standing Committee for Education. U3A members are able to follow a course of study from a choice of approximately 12 wide-ranging subjects, led by volunteer U3A tutors. In most cases previous experience is not required.

20th-23rdJuly - Harper Adams University College, Newport, Shropshire.

Architecture, Art history, Crime & punishment, Digital image editing, France, Garden History, Geology, Industrial Heritage, Literature, Philosophy, Writing.

24th-27th August - Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, Gloucestershire.

Architecture, Art history, Christianity in England, Cinema history, History, Literature, Music Appreciation, Painting & Drawing, Shakespeare, Spanish.

COSTS FOR SUMMER SCHOOL

Full board residential delegate in en-suite accommodation £299.00 per person

Non-residential day delegate including lunches £114.00 per person DEPOSIT £70.00 per person

U3A SUMMER SCHOOL, HARLAXTON

This popular summer school has just published its programme for 2009 and it is advisable to book early if you intend going.
The following subjects are being offered -

Week 1 (5-8 July 2009) Creative Writing, Art in Spain, Dukes of Rutland, Papercraft, Antiques and Collectables and for music-lovers Great Ninth Symphonies

Week 2 (9-12 July 2009) A Northern Drift, The Rise of the House of Windsor, Portraits and Still Life, Gardens and Gardening, An intro to Archaeology, Singing for Fun.
