Annual Summer Picnic 2008

In spite of the inclement weather, over 50 members attended at the Scout Centre, Ricket Lane, Ravenshead on 19th August. A memorable spread was provided by members. £100 was donated by Mansfield U3A towards the new Robin Hood Scout Centre. This was gratefully received by Janet Whitlam on their behalf.

Trip to Liverpool

On a very wet August day, a coach load of members visited Liverpool, primarily to see the Gustav Klimpt exhibition at Tate Liverpool in the Albert Dock. Some members made other arrangements, but a good time was had by all. Everyone agreed that it was an excellent destination, with plenty of places to visit. Thanks to Pauline Boucher for organising the trip.

Changes at the Luncheon Group

Hillary Hamilton-Ross bowed out as co-ordinator of the Luncheon Club at The Hostess, Sookholm, on 21st August to much acclaim for her efforts in developing this highly-successful group. David Ling has accepted the baton and is launching the 2008/9 programme in Italian style on 18th September at Moda in Hucknall and he tells me the club will be celebrating a turkey-free Christmas "En Famille" at the Maid Marian restaurant, Edwinstowe.

40 U3A members fly to Jersey September 29th - 6th October 2008

Despite the one hour plus delay at the airport, everything went smoothly. The two drivers from Johnson Bros. Wilf & Richard were most helpful, Wilf at the airport and Richard on the return journey home. Unfortunately on our return journey we had two passengers with bashed cases, but having reported their dilemma to BMI Baby they received replacement suitcases within two days - in this day and age most efficient!
Everyone enthused about the hotel and the food, which were excellent. Three of our couples were extremely lucky to have suites - most luxurious, so it made their holiday! One of the other guests said that, since the refurbishments, she thought it was now better than the Metropole its sister hotel!
We all found plenty to do and up to Sunday, the day before we came back, everyone ventured out into the cool wind either on the organised trips, used their hired car, bought bus passes or members of the walking club enjoyed their daily excercise of 6-12 miles per day. Even on Sunday morning when we had torrential rain, a few members braved it either to go to church or a had a walk round town albeit they returned absolutely drenched.
Four of our members won money at Bingo, two the 'Full house' & two a line each. Another group won 2 bottles of champagne for winning the quiz so all in all we did very well there.
The only downer was that almost everyone caught the well known Jersey cold - some worse than others who had to go to bed for a couple of days, & one or two even bringing it home, having to go to bed there. However I am assured that they still enjoyed the 8 days break and are looking forward to Thursford Christmas Spectacular in December, North Wales in June 2009, Poland in September 2009 and as far away as the 10 day holiday to Oberammagau in Bavaria in June 2010.

Wine Appreciation

On Tuesday 22nd October 2008, thirteen members from wine appreciation groups 2 & 3 amalgamated for a visit to the Alcazar Micro-Brewery in Basford, followed by an authentic Thai meal at the Fox & Crown Pub in front of the brewery.
Members met at the tram station at Hucknall and travelled to Basford by tram, then walked the short distance to the brewery where they were met by the head brewer Dave, who showed them the workings of the brewery and explained the processes involved. Members were able to taste the product as it was being made as well as the finished product in the welcoming confines of the Fox & Crown, where several of their brews were on sale.
The Thai kitchen staff then took orders from the authentic Thai menu and everone agreed that the quality of both the beers and the food could not be faulted.

Swing Band Evening

OH WHAT A NIGHT !

What a brilliant night we had at the "Stardust Big Band Evening" which was held at the St.John's Centre. The music which was superb was provided by a group of very talented musicians. The vocalist was very good singing songs that brought back many memories. Several pieces featured individual instrumentalists. There was plenty of opportunity for dancing. We have some very good movers and shakers in Mansfield U3A !

As usual our group of Ladies provided a lovely supper. They go to so much trouble to ensure that it is not only delicious but also so well presented even down to the flowers on the tables. We had cheese with salad and pickles and French bread followed by excellent home made fruit cake and lemon drizzle cake.

Where else could you have good music, good food and an evening with friends from Mansfield U3A for just £6.

Many thanks to Sylvia and her group of helpers who all worked so hard. Let us hope it becomes an annual event.

Luncheon Group

On Thursday 18th December, members of Mansfield U3A Luncheon Group enjoyed a French-style Christmas Lunch at the Maid Marion, Edwinstowe. We were especially pleased to welcome Sherwood U3A chairman Liz Wilson, who succeeded in enlivening the party.
