Local
History
Mansfield
U3A Local History Group explores the heritage of this ancient
Nottinghamshire market town, which, by mid-Victorian times, became the
county’s second-largest township.
Archaeological
finds indicate that settlements have been here since Neolithic times
– while numerous finds, including the remains
of a villa, show that there
was a Roman settlement in the area. Several local names indicate both
Danish and Saxon influence.
Please come along to a
meeting if you'd like to know more about the early history of our area,
its development as a hub for agriculture, manufacturing, mining and
commerce – or
would like to help us find out more about it.
Or
start by exploring our links to the information sources at the bottom
of this page.
How
we started
WE HELD our inaugural meeting in September 2011 when it became clear
that many members of Mansfield U3A had interests in a wide variety of
subjects, all relating to the local area, that they'd like to share
while continuing to learn more about them from others.
At our second meeting, held in October, several members gave short
talks on a wide range of subjects, including Mansfield Rock Houses, the
birth of the National Health Service, Queen Elizabeth's Girls School,
St. Peter's Church and the Stanton Iron and Coal Company
– that were so well-received that similar presentations will feature in
our future programme, together with related visits and invited speakers.
The programme below will be updated as the year evolves so please check back regularly and look for news in the newsletter.
