Mansfield U3A Garden Visits group arranges a programme of visits to notable gardens during the warmer months.

Saturday 12th May Malvern Spring Gardening Show

The perfect place to start your gardening year. Monty Don thinks it now ranks with the Chelsea Flower Show. There is something for everyone. Lots of gardening features and show entertainment.

Cost £26.50.
Departing from Odeon car park at 7.30 am.

Thursday 28th June Castle Howard Fifteen miles north-west of York, this is one of England’s grandest Baroque mansions designed for Charles Howard, 3rd Earl of Carlisle, by Vanbrugh and Hawksmoor. It is surrounded by wonderful landscaped gardens and parkland with spectacular views. It has one of the most extensive collections of old-fashioned roses in the country.

Cost £21.50.

Friday 6th July – Tuesday 10th July Cotswolds Garden Visits Holiday

Friday: Sudeley Castle and Gardens on the way down to Gloucester. There has been a house on this magnificent site with views over the Cotswolds Hills for over a 1000 years. Explore ten individual gardens set among ancient buildings. Open 10.30 – 5 pm. Refreshments. Price £6.50

Saturday: Painswick Rococo Garden.
The Rococo Garden is a fascinating step back to a flamboyant period of English Garden Design. It was originally laid out in the early 18th century. 10 acres. Open 11 – 5pm. Coach House Restaurant. Price £5.50. Some gradients. Explore Painswick village later during day.

Sunday: Cerney House and Gardens.
A garden in a sheltered hollow surrounded by beech woods. It was inspired by Rosemary Verey after a visit to Barnsley House. A garden full of colour and interest. 10 acres + 40 acres of parkland.Open 10 – 5pm. Refreshments. Price £4. Explore Gloucester later in the afternoon.

Monday am: Hidcote Manor Garden. National Trust.
One of the most famous gardens in Britain. Lawrence Johnston had a vision of a wild garden within a formal setting. 10.5 acres. Open 10 - 6pm. 2 hours 20 mins to explore garden. Refreshments. If not a National Trust member, price £8.50

Then 5 minutes away: Kiftsgate Court – a series of interconnecting gardens in 4 acres. They are the creation of three generations of women gardeners. Open 12 – 6pm. Refreshments. Price £6.

Tuesday: On the journey home, spend some free time in Stratford-upon-Avon and visit the Shakespearian Gardens.

Friday 31st August
Renishaw Hall and Gardens, Derbyshire. Sir George Sitwell spent much of his life in Italy and this is the style he re-created at Renishaw a hundred years ago. Explore the Hall, the sheltered gardens to the south – there are ten gardens in all. There is art, a museum, a national yucca collection, a vineyard and more.

Cost £30. (A package that includes coffee on arrival, a guided tour of the House, entry to the Gardens, lunch, and then afternoon tea.)

Mansfield U3A Gardens Visits group at Dorthy Clive Garden
The Garden Visits Group visited the Dorothy Clive Garden in North Staffordshire on 10th June. The garden was created by Colonel Harry Clive in memory of his wife Dorothy.

Trentham Estate - the historic Italian Gardens are one of the most impressive, significant and important garden projects in Europe.

Sheffield Park - noted for a magnificent 'Capability' Brown landscaped garden with waterfalls, cascades, four large lakes and a profusion of colour all year.
Wisley - home to the RHS and one of the great gardens of the world with huge and diverse plant collections covering fruit, vegetables, alpines and bulbs as well as herbaceous and woody plants.
Belton House - a good guide to the gardens that were designed by William Emes, a follower of Capability Brown.
